VANCOUVER — Jonathan David netted a sublime hat-trick as 2026 World Cup co-hosts Canada stormed to a historic 6-0 demolition of nine-man Qatar at BC Place, capturing their first-ever victory in tournament history.
Jesse Marsch’s side put on a clinical attacking masterclass on Friday to command the driver's seat in Group B. The Les Rouges frontline looked dangerous from the opening whistle, breaking the deadlock just 16 minutes in. Qatar shot-stopper Mahmoud Abunada failed to clean up a stinging volley, allowing lethal marksman Cyle Larin to ghost into the six-yard box and poke home the opener. With the strike, Larin carved his name into the national record books as the first Canadian to score multiple World Cup goals.
Then began the Jonathan David show. The Lille marksman doubled the advantage in the 28th minute, nodding home a precise cross, before sweeping home his second just on the stroke of halftime following a brilliant tactical sequence. By then, Julen Lopetegui’s side had already seen their tactical blueprint completely unravel under intense Canadian pressure, as left-back Homam El Amin was dismissed late in the first half for a last-man challenge.
Matters worsened for the Asian champions immediately after the interval. Just two minutes into the second half, midfielder Assim Madibo was shown a straight red card for a reckless, lunging tackle on Ismael Kone. The challenge forced a distraught Kone off the pitch with what appeared to be a significant lower-leg injury. Remarkably, Kone's replacement, Nathan Saliba, provided an instant fairytale spark, curling a stunning 25-yard free-kick into the top corner with virtually his first touch of the match to make it 4-0.
A miserable night for the visitors was compounded in the 75th minute when defender Mohammed Al Manai inadvertently deflected a cross into his own net. The rampant Canadians refused to take their foot off the gas, and David put the exclamation mark on a legendary individual performance in the 92nd minute. Latching onto a delicate throughball from Saliba, the striker executed a brilliant turn inside the area and rifled his shot past Abunada to complete his treble, joining Lionel Messi as the only players to score a hat-trick at the 2026 finals.
Canada finished the match having fired 32 shots on the Qatari goal, cementing a triumph that eclipses any previous Concacaf scoring record in a single World Cup match. The result keeps Canada perfect at the top of Group B with six points. They will travel to face Switzerland in a highly anticipated final group fixture to decide who tops the group, while winless Qatar face a nearly impossible mathematical route to the Round of 32.
