Austria marked their long-awaited return to the FIFA World Cup after a 28-year hiatus with a hard-fought 3-1 victory over tournament debutants Jordan in their Group J opener at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium in Santa Clara. The victory sealed Austria's first World Cup match win in 36 years, drawing them level on points with Argentina at the top of the group.
Ralf Rangnick's side enjoyed the lion's share of early possession and duly found their breakthrough in the 20th minute. Romano Schmid collected a pass on the edge of the box and unleashed an unstoppable, curling strike past Jordan goalkeeper Yazeed Abulaila to make it 1-0. However, the World Cup newcomers refused to back down and created history just five minutes into the second half. Sparking a lightning-fast counterattack, Noor Al-Rawabdeh released Ali Olwan, who brilliantly cut inside the penalty area to bend an inch-perfect finish into the net, scoring Jordan's first-ever goal on football's biggest stage.
The equalizer completely shifted the momentum, prompting Rangnick to introduce veteran forward Marko Arnautovic to restore calm. Austria finally reclaimed the lead in the 76th minute under fortunate circumstances when a dangerous cross pressured Jordanian defender Yazan Al-Arab into turning the ball into his own net. Jordan pushed valiantly for a second equalizer but was caught out deep in stoppage time. Following a VAR review for handball, Austria was awarded a penalty in the 102nd minute, which Arnautovic coolly converted to seal a vital three points before their highly anticipated showdown against Argentina on June 22.
