7M - Iran 2-2 New Zealand: Iran Battle Back Twice to Secure 2-2 Draw Against New Zealand Amid High Political Tension in LA

Iran’s Team Melli showed immense resilience on the pitch, coming from behind twice to rescue a 2-2 draw against New Zealand in an emotionally and politically charged World Cup Group G clash in Los Angeles.
The highly anticipated fixture at the Los Angeles Stadium went ahead under a heavy security presence. Outside the venue, hundreds of demonstrators gathered to protest against the Iranian government, while inside, the complex geo-political reality of recent conflicts and peace talks spilled into the stands. Anti-regime elements booed the Iranian anthem and waved the pre-revolutionary Lion and Sun flags, even celebrating alongside Kiwi fans when the All Whites took the lead. Yet, the vast majority of the 70,000-strong crowd remained fiercely loyal to Team Melli, drowning out the dissent with thunderous chants.
New Zealand capitalised on the chaotic atmosphere early on. Just minutes into the game, captain Chris Wood set up Elijah Just, who clinical volleyed home from inside the box to give the oceanian side an unexpected lead.
Iran, fielding several stars whose domestic season had been halted since February due to military strikes in the region, fought their way back. After the half-hour mark, Ramin Rezaeian reacted quickest to a loose, blocked ball in the penalty area, poking it past the New Zealand keeper to send the stadium into raptures.
The All Whites restored their advantage early in the second half through the exact same combination. Wood turned provider once more, sliding a perfectly weighted pass to Just, who hammered it home for his second of the night.
However, Iran refused to back down. Just ten minutes later, Rezaeian turned from scorer to provider, delivering a pinpoint cross to Mohammad Mohebbi, who powered a magnificent header in off the far post to seal the 2-2 stalemate.
The thrilling draw leaves Group G completely wide open, as Belgium and Egypt also shared the points in a 1-1 draw earlier in the day. Iran will stay in Los Angeles to prepare for a heavy-weight clash against Belgium on Sunday, while New Zealand travel to Vancouver to face Egypt.
