World Cup co-host Canada fought back to claim a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina in their Group B opener on Friday. The historic match at Toronto Stadium marked the first men's World Cup game ever played on Canadian soil.
The visiting Balkan side silenced the home crowd in the 21st minute when forward Jovo Lukic headed home the opening goal from Bosnia's initial corner kick. Jesse Marsch's side pushed hard for an equalizer in the second half and finally broke through in the 78th minute when substitute Cyle Larin scored to level the match.
The tense final minutes saw a late flurry of yellow cards and a dramatic stoppage-time block by Bosnian defender Tarik Muharemovic, which denied Larin a potential winning goal. Despite missing out on a full victory, Canada successfully earned their first-ever tournament point after losing all six of their matches in previous World Cup appearances.
