Manchester United are now seriously exploring a potential move for Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott, as they progress plans to strengthen their midfield.

Sources have told Flashscore that Scott, 22, is emerging as a realistic target for United, who have been monitoring developments around his contract situation at Bournemouth.

Scott has been expected to progress on a new deal, but talks have yet to advance, prompting interest from several Premier League rivals.

Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham are among clubs linked but United have maintained relationships with figures around the player and have been assessing his situation before deciding whether to make a formal move.

Rather than submitting an offer out of the blue, the club have begun gathering information on potential terms.

Scott is one of two midfielders under active consideration, alongside West Ham's Mateus Fernandes.

United are exploring both options as they look to avoid another prolonged transfer saga and want clarity over their midfield plans before the latter stages of the window.

West Ham remain determined to keep Fernandes and, as revealed earlier this week, are currently unwilling to entertain offers below 350million - which is where United view him.

Bournemouth are also expected to fight to keep Scott, particularly after the midfielder played a key role in the club's impressive campaign that secured Europa League qualification.

The Cherries are keen to reward the player, who joined from Bristol City in a 325 million deal three years ago, with an improved contract. However, the lack of progress on those negotiations has alerted United and other clubs.

Chelsea, Liverpool and Spurs are understood to have Scott on their midfield shortlists, creating competition for his signature should Bournemouth become open to a sale.

United remain determined not to overpay and will only pursue a deal if they believe it represents good value.

The club also continue to admire Newcastle United's Sandro Tonali, although there has been little indication so far that a move could materialise. Any potential deal for the Italy international is also likely to command a fee that United currently view as unrealistic.

Scott is part of England's training camp in America at the moment, further underlining his growing reputation.
