7M - Cristian Volpato Switches Allegiance To Join Australia World Cup Camp

Former Italy youth international Cristian Volpato has reversed his previous international allegiance and will join Australia's pre World Cup training camp in Los Angeles, Football Australia announced.

The 22 year old Sassuolo attacking midfielder, who was born in Sydney and holds dual citizenship, previously declined an offer to represent the Socceroos at the 2022 World Cup. A subsequent approach by current Australia coach Tony Popovic earlier this year also appeared unsuccessful when Volpato publicly stated his intent to wait for an Italy call up. However, Football Australia has now secured a formal release letter from the Italian football federation and submitted the final change of association paperwork to FIFA to clear him for selection.

Volpato's addition serves as a timely boost for the squad following the loss of Middlesbrough midfielder Riley McGree to a hamstring injury. Popovic is set to announce his final 26 man roster on Monday for the tournament held across Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Australia will begin their campaign against Turkey in Vancouver on June 13, before facing the U.S. and Paraguay in the group stage.
