In an exclusive conversation with Flashscore, former Real Madrid defender Ivan Helguera analyzed the ongoing issues surrounding Kylian Mbappe at the club, pointing the finger at Alvaro Arbeloa and the hierarchy that appointed him.
Helguera suggested that the current complications stem from poor leadership prior to these events. He noted that Arbeloa had only five months of reserve-team coaching experience before taking the reins of the senior squad, making mistakes inevitable due to his lack of preparation for such a high-pressure role. He added that the club directors who put Arbeloa in that position share the responsibility. Looking ahead, Helguera voiced his preference for Jurgen Klopp as the ideal tactical fit for the managerial vacancy, while expressing some reservations about a rumored return for Jose Mourinho, who has not managed at the highest tier of the sport for several years.
Shifting his focus to international football, the ex-Spain international labeled his home country as the clear frontrunner for the World Cup due to their superior style of play and team chemistry. However, he warned that being labeled heavy favorites could bring dangerous pressure. Helguera specifically praised Pedri, asserting that the midfielder has finally matured into the successor to Xavi and Andres Iniesta now that the initial immense pressure on him has eased. He also voiced his preference for Joan Garcia to start in goal following a standout club season.
