Stam admits Man Utd need two midfielders to replace Casemiro and to slot in with Mainoo

Manchester United legend Jaap Stam has spoken on what the club's summer plans should be for the midfield rebuild.

Casemiro has been instrumental in Michael Carrick’s side securing a Champions League place as he scored nine goals in 33 league games whilst also locking down the midfield throughout the campaign.

The Brazilian starred in a midfield built of Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo in a trio that blended could have challenged for the title if Casemiro didn’t announce he would depart this summer.

Speaking to ComeOn, Stam revealed that the Red Devils will need not just one but two introductions to the side if Carrick is to find success in the middle of the park next season.

“Everybody talks about replacing Casemiro, who had a great season this year and had such an impact. He changed his game compared to the season before, becoming much fitter, scoring goals, and using his experience to help other players within his preferred system.

“Even when older, experienced players improve when they have confidence, which I think is a normal thing. However, that midfield position is one they need to address.

“They need to bring in one, or perhaps even two, extra midfield players who have the legs and the ability on the ball to handle the build-up and guide the team alongside Kobbie Mainoo. This would allow Bruno to play as a number 10, which is very important, as we've seen at United. So, everybody is thinking about that position.

“I like Carlos Baleba from Brighton, he still stands out to me. And I also really like Sandro Tonali from Newcastle in that role. These two stand out for me as players I’d like at Man Utd.”

Atalanta’s Ederson has emerged as a leading target for United as the summer approaches but if Stam is correct, the club will need to bring in more just one target over the coming months.
