7M - Depay Joins Dutch World Cup Squad As Frimpong Misses Out

Ronald Koeman has selected his 26 man Netherlands squad for the upcoming World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The roster is heavily influenced by the Premier League, with 15 players based in England's top division. This includes seven out of eight defenders, with Inter Milan's Denzel Dumfries being the sole exception.

Memphis Depay has successfully recovered from a hamstring injury to make the cut. The national team's all time top scorer, who has netted 55 goals in 108 international matches, is fit enough to lead the attack. Meanwhile, Arsenal's Jurrien Timber has also been chosen despite not playing for his club since March due to an ankle problem. West Ham's Crysencio Summerville has been called up and could potentially earn his senior international debut during the tournament. Midfielder Marten de Roon makes his return after a long absence since March 2024, alongside Guus Til, who features after earning just one cap since June 2022.

However, there are notable absences from the team. Liverpool full back Jeremie Frimpong was surprisingly left out despite a productive debut season at Anfield, as Koeman opted for alternative choices in defense. Stefan de Vrij missed out on selection due to an ongoing injury. Additionally, Xavi Simons and Jerdy Schouten have both been ruled out after sustaining anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears.

The Dutch team will kick off their Group F campaign against Japan on June 14, before meeting Sweden and Tunisia.
