7M - Mateta Pursues France World Cup Call-Up to Fulfill Dream

Crystal Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta is determined to earn a spot on France's roster for the FIFA World Cup next month, describing the opportunity as a lifelong ambition. The 28-year-old striker, who holds three senior caps for Didier Deschamps' squad, missed the most recent selection because of a knee issue.
Mateta previously gained tournament experience as one of three overage players at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, where France finished as runners-up under coach Thierry Henry. Since making his senior international debut last year, he has recorded two goals in three appearances for Les Bleus.
"I thought about it every day while I was injured, and I will do everything possible to make it happen by proving on the pitch that I am ready, by working like a madman," Mateta told L'Equipe.
He noted the distinction between the Olympics and the World Cup: "It is different from the 2024 Olympics, first because my role in the squad is not the same, and second because this tournament brings together the world's top players."
Mateta added, "It is a childhood dream, like telling yourself, 'I can score for the French national team.' Even for you as a journalist, it is something extraordinary, and everyone wants to be part of it. So imagine as a player. If I can help the team, I will be the happiest person in the world."
With the global tournament scheduled across June and July, Mateta remains focused on demonstrating his readiness through consistent performances and relentless preparation.
