Legendary Italian manager Fabio Capello has sparked fresh debate by describing Ronaldo Nazario as a negative leader during the Brazilian striker's tenure at Real Madrid.
Speaking at a public event in Ferrara on May 3, 2026, Capello reflected on his time coaching the forward. He claimed Ronaldo failed to maintain professional standards, stating the player did not train adequately and influenced teammates negatively. Capello highlighted a notable physical change, noting Ronaldo weighed 84 kilograms when he won the World Cup but had increased to 94 kilograms upon arriving in Madrid.
The former Real Madrid coach added that Ronaldo's lifestyle choices, including frequent partying and lack of focus, undermined his potential. While acknowledging the striker's extraordinary talent, Capello maintained that his off-field habits prevented him from setting a positive example in the dressing room.
Capello also shared personal reflections, admitting that leaving Real Madrid to return to AC Milan ranked as the greatest error of his managerial career. He further commented on other players, describing Antonio Cassano and Mario Balotelli as wasted talents, while characterizing Johan Cruyff as both brilliant and arrogant.
The remarks have renewed discussion about Ronaldo's legacy, balancing his undeniable on-field achievements with ongoing questions about discipline and consistency throughout his career.
