Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has decided to sign a one-year contract extension, committing his immediate future to the Bundesliga champions. The 40-year-old captain believes he can continue performing at the highest level for another season.

According to Sky Sports Germany, Neuer had initially planned to announce his decision in early April but postponed it until after Bayern's Champions League quarter-final tie against Real Madrid. With that milestone passed, talks have progressed, and Bild reports that Neuer's agent was recently seen at Sabener Strasse to discuss final terms.

While Bayern are eager to retain their legendary goalkeeper, the financial structure of the new deal may differ from his current arrangement. Neuer currently earns close to 20 million euros annually, placing him among the club's top earners. As Bayern aim to streamline their wage bill ahead of summer reinforcements in attack, defense, and midfield, a modest salary adjustment is expected.

Beyond the contract details, Bayern and Neuer have reportedly agreed on a revised role for the 2026-27 campaign. Per Bild, Neuer will accept reduced playing time to facilitate the development of Jonas Urbig, the 21-year-old goalkeeper who has made 15 appearances across all competitions this season. Neuer's injuries earlier in the campaign inadvertently accelerated Urbig's exposure, and the club now intends to formalize a succession plan.

This arrangement benefits all parties: Neuer remains captain and a vital leadership presence on and off the pitch, while Urbig gains structured opportunities to grow into the long-term number one. Bayern hope to finalize the agreement in the coming weeks before the current season concludes.
