Manchester United have no intention of entering a price battle with Manchester City for Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson, according to sources speaking to ESPN. The 23-year-old England international remains a priority target as United plan a midfield overhaul this summer.

However, Forest are reportedly seeking approximately £120 million ($162m) for Anderson, a valuation United consider significantly overstated. With City also pursuing the player, United are unwilling to engage in competitive bidding that could further inflate the transfer fee.

United possess available funds this summer but aim to finance their primary midfield acquisition through player sales, potentially generating £80 million to £90 million. This approach would preserve the majority of their budget for additional targets, including another midfielder, a left winger, and possibly a centre-back or full-back.

Forest maintain their asking price is justified, citing Anderson's anticipated role with England at the upcoming World Cup and his contract running through 2029. The club's valuation draws partial comparison to MoisEs Caicedo's £115 million ($155m) transfer from Brighton to Chelsea in 2023.

Sources also indicate United intend to adhere to a revised wage structure. High-earning players such as Casemiro, Marcus Rashford, and Jadon Sancho are all expected to depart, helping management maintain a sustainable payroll.

United previously showed strong interest in Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo during the January window but withdrew after his representatives held discussions with Manchester City regarding personal terms.

Should Anderson prove unattainable, United have identified alternative midfield options, including Carlos Baleba, AurElien TchouamEni, and Sandro Tonali. While no formal approach has been made to Atalanta concerning Ederson, AtlEtico Madrid have reportedly initiated contact with the Serie A club about a potential deal.
