7M - 2026 World Cup Format Explained: 48 Teams, New Groups and Knockout Path to July Final

The 2026 FIFA World Cup introduces a historic format expansion, featuring 48 national teams across three host nations: the United States, Canada and Mexico. The tournament structure has been redesigned to accommodate the larger field while maintaining competitive balance from group stage to final.

Teams are divided into 12 groups of four. Each side plays three group matches, with the top two from every group advancing automatically, creating a 24-team pool. These are joined by the eight best third-placed finishers, forming a 32-team knockout bracket.

Group standings are determined first by points. If teams are level, tiebreakers apply in this order: head-to-head results, goal difference, goals scored, Fair Play record, and finally FIFA Ranking. The Fair Play system deducts points for disciplinary actions: yellow card minus one, indirect red minus three, direct red minus five, and yellow followed by direct red minus five. This criterion proved decisive at the 2018 World Cup when Japan progressed over Senegal based on fewer cautions despite identical records in other categories.

The knockout phase begins with a Round of 32. Bracket design rewards group winners, who typically face third-placed qualifiers, while runners-up may encounter tougher early matchups. From there, winners advance through the Round of 16, quarterfinals and semifinals. The third-place match is set for July 18 in Miami, with the final scheduled for July 19, 2026 in East Rutherford.

Due to expected high temperatures at several venues, three-minute hydration breaks will be permitted in each half. Knockout matches tied after regulation will feature two 15-minute extra time periods, followed by a penalty shootout if needed.

With more teams, more matches and a restructured pathway, the 2026 edition aims to deliver heightened drama from opening kickoff to the championship decider.
