7M - Iran confirm full readiness for 2026 World Cup despite regional tensions

Iran has announced that all national institutions are fully prepared to support the men's football team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup across the United States, Canada and Mexico. Government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani told state broadcaster IRIB on Wednesday that the Ministry of Youth and Sports has completed all required logistical arrangements under the sport minister's directive, prioritizing facilities and resources for optimal tournament performance.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino reaffirmed on April 16 that Iran, having secured qualification, is expected to compete in the June 11 to July 19 event despite ongoing geopolitical tensions. "Iran has to come, they represent their people, they have qualified, the players want to play," Infantino stated, adding that "sports should be outside of politics."
Iran is drawn in Group G with all three matches scheduled in the United States: two fixtures in Los Angeles and one in Seattle, using Tucson, Arizona as the team base. Participation had been uncertain following the February 28 escalation between the United States, Israel and Iran. Tehran previously explored a potential boycott and formally requested FIFA relocate its matches to Mexico, a proposal the governing body declined.
A fragile truce took effect April 8 after weeks of reciprocal strikes. Direct talks in Islamabad on April 11-12 concluded without a breakthrough, though the United States subsequently extended the ceasefire as diplomatic channels remain active. The expanded 48-team World Cup kicks off June 11. US President Donald Trump noted in March that while Iran's squad would be welcomed, he raised questions about attendance given security considerations.
