2026 World Cup - France: Guy Stephan reveals insight on Deschamps' squad list

With Hugo Ekitike officially ruled out of the 2026 World Cup, Didier Deschamps will be forced to make adjustments. Guy Stephan weighs in.

It now seems highly unlikely that Didier Deschamps will call up a completely new player, whether in attack or any other position. At least, that's what Guy Stephan revealed in an interview with Ouest-France.
"Above all, we hope there won't be any more bad news. Unfortunately, Hugo Ekitike suffered a serious injury. It's a tough blow and a huge loss for the French team. He has a unique profile that you can't find elsewhere. He's a young player who performed very well during the American tour. He felt he would be part of the squad, and in just a few seconds, everything fell apart. We'll have to adapt and find a way to make up for his absence. Now, the squad list is decided right up until the final days. You should never say never, but I don't think a player who has never been called up before will make the World Cup." he explained.
