Bayer Leverkusen 1-2 Augsburg: Rieder Penalty Ends Hosts Unbeaten Run In Bundesliga Clash

Bayer Leverkusen suffered their first Bundesliga defeat since February as Fabian Rieder's stoppage-time penalty secured a 2-1 comeback win for Augsburg at the BayArena on April 18, 2026.

Patrik Schick gave the hosts an early advantage with a powerful header in the 12th minute. Augsburg responded quickly, with Rieder leveling from outside the box after Leverkusen failed to clear a corner.

Despite dominating play and registering 35 shots with 10 on target, Leverkusen could not break through Augsburg's resilient defense. Goalkeeper Finn Dahmen produced nine crucial saves to preserve parity, while Mark Flekken also made important interventions at the opposite end to keep his side in contention.

As the match approached a draw, Montrell Culbreath fouled Uchenna Ogundu in the box during the 97th minute. Rieder stepped up and calmly converted the penalty, sending Flekken the wrong way to complete his brace and seal all three points for the visitors.

Leverkusen manager Kasper Hjulmand saw his side accumulate 3.36 expected goals and 61 touches in the opposition penalty area, yet profligate finishing proved costly. The result ended a seven-game unbeaten league run for Leverkusen, who remain sixth in the standings.

Augsburg's composure in front of goal ultimately decided a tightly contested encounter, dealing a blow to Leverkusen's hopes of closing in on the Champions League qualification places.
