Atletico Madrid 2-2 Real Sociedad: Matarazzo's side secure Copa del Rey glory with penalty shootout victory

Real Sociedad claimed their fourth Copa del Rey title after defeating Atletico Madrid 3-2 on penalties following a 2-2 draw after extra time at Estadio La Cartuja in Seville on April 18, 2026.

The final started at extraordinary speed, with Ander Barrenetxea giving the Basque side the lead inside 15 seconds. Atletico Madrid responded through Ademola Lookman in the 18th minute, but Mikel Oyarzabal restored Real Sociedad's advantage from the penalty spot just before halftime following a handling error by Juan Musso.

Diego Simeone's side intensified pressure in the second half. Substitutions including Nicolas Gonzalez, Alexander Sorloth, and Julian alvarez shifted momentum, with alvarez equalizing in the 83rd minute to force extra time.
