Posted Saturday, April 18, 2026 by 7M Sport

Saudi Arabia have named Georgios Donis as their new head coach for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, replacing Herve Renard who was dismissed in April 2026. The change comes less than two months before the tournament begins in North America.
Renard's second spell with the Green Falcons ended after disappointing friendly results, including a 4-0 defeat to Egypt and a 2-1 loss to Serbia in March. The French manager had previously guided Saudi Arabia to a memorable 2-1 victory over Argentina at the 2022 World Cup.
Donis, a former Greece international, joins from Saudi Pro League club Al-Khaleej where he has served as head coach since 2024. The 56-year-old Greek manager has extensive experience in Saudi football, having coached five clubs in the country. An official announcement regarding his appointment is expected shortly.
Saudi Arabia have been drawn in Group H alongside Spain, Uruguay and Cape Verde for the 2026 World Cup. The nation has qualified for seven World Cups, with their best performance being a round of 16 finish at the 1994 tournament in the United States.
Al-Khaleej currently sit 11th in the 18-team Saudi Pro League standings under Donis. The new coach will be tasked with preparing the squad for group stage matches scheduled across venues in the United States.
