Former Celtic midfielder Shunsuke Nakamura has been appointed to the Japan national team coaching staff ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Japan Football Association confirmed. The announcement comes as the Samurai Blue finalize preparations for the tournament in North America.
Nakamura, renowned for his exceptional free-kick ability during a distinguished playing career, will serve in an assistant capacity alongside head coach Hajime Moriyasu. The JFA expressed confidence that his experience and tactical insight would strengthen the squad's World Cup campaign.
"We are pleased to welcome Shunsuke Nakamura to our coaching team," a federation statement read. "His understanding of international football and connection with current players will be valuable assets."
The 47-year-old earned 98 caps for Japan during his playing days and featured at the 2006 and 2010 World Cups. After successful spells with Yokohama F. Marinos, Celtic, Espanyol, and Reggina, he retired in 2022 and has since focused on coaching development.
Japan faces a challenging group stage draw including matches against strong European opposition. With Moriyasu continuing as head coach and Nakamura adding specialist expertise, the team aims to build on recent competitive performances against top-ranked nations.
Supporters have welcomed the appointment, citing Nakamura's leadership qualities and deep knowledge of both Japanese and European football cultures. His role is expected to focus on technical development and set-piece strategy during the tournament.
