7M - World Cup 2026 Transport Row: FIFA Accused Over Soaring Fan Travel Costs In New Jersey

A dispute over public transport pricing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup has intensified, with host cities and fans criticizing steep fare increases for matchday travel.

New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill publicly challenged FIFA, alleging the governing body is passing transportation expenses onto supporters. In a social media statement, Sherrill noted that under agreements inherited by her administration, FIFA contributes zero dollars toward fan transit. This leaves New Jersey Transit responsible for an estimated $48 million (£35.4 million) to move approximately 40,000 spectators to and from each of the eight matches at MetLife Stadium.

Fare hikes have drawn particular scrutiny. A return train journey from New York City to MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, typically priced at £9.50 for NFL fixtures, will rise to £74 during the tournament. The venue hosts key fixtures including England's group-stage encounter with Panama and the July 19 Final.

Similar concerns emerged in Boston, where travel to Gillette Stadium in Foxborough—scheduled to host Scotland's matches against Haiti and Morocco, plus England versus Ghana—has jumped from £20 to £80 per trip. By contrast, Philadelphia has maintained standard pricing, with access to Lincoln Financial Field available for £2.10 each way.

Sherrill emphasized the disparity: "FIFA is generating $11 billion (£8.1 billion) from this World Cup while charging up to $10,000 (£7,300) for a single final ticket. I will not burden New Jersey commuters with these costs."

FIFA responded by referencing the 2018 Host City Agreements, which initially mandated complimentary fan transport. In 2023, requirements were revised to permit transit "at cost" for ticket holders. The organization added that it has collaborated with host cities on mobility planning and advocated for federal funding support.

As the debate continues, supporters face elevated travel expenses on top of already high ticket prices for the North American tournament.
