Former Tottenham and Portugal midfielder Pedro Mendes has predicted who could replace Arne Slot at Liverpool if he departs.

Having lost 2-0 to Paris Saint-Germain in their Champions League quarter-final first leg, Liverpool’s chances of winning silverware this season are next to none.

After overseeing the Reds' dismal Premier League title defence, Slot may not even grab Champions League football for the side ahead of next season where Liverpool are far from favourites.

Liverpool currently sit 21 points behind league leaders Arsenal and have shown no signs of making a comeback in recent weeks as they exited the FA Cup, lost to Brighton and were picked apart by PSG.

Speaking to Thunderpick, Mendes revealed who could step in for Slot if he is let go in the coming weeks as pressure mounts on the Dutchman.

“I honestly can see a big shuffle happening this summer for Premier League clubs. If, for example, Arne Slot leaves Liverpool, I honestly see the choice being between Xabi Alonso and Steven Gerrard, to be fair.

“Xabi Alonso will likely be the first choice, but if he decides not to go, Gerrard will be talked about. He did a great job at Rangers, and he’d want to repeat that, nothing would mean more to him than winning the title with Liverpool.”

The Reds face Fulham this weekend and fans have little hope that the club will bounce back despite the return of Alexander Isak who should add more depth in a Liverpool attack that has been toothless since the start of 2026.
