7M - Calafiori Channels World Cup Pain Into Arsenal Push

Riccardo Calafiori played a pivotal role as Arsenal secured a 1-0 first-leg advantage over Sporting CP in their Champions League quarter-final, a result that provided welcome relief after a challenging period for both club and country.

The Italy international reflected on a difficult fortnight that saw Arsenal suffer consecutive cup defeats, including an FA Cup loss to Southampton, while the Azzurri once again failed to qualify for the World Cup. "It's been tough, but that is the beauty of football: it is 100% better now," Calafiori said. "This chance to play three days later rather than just stay home and think about it was welcome. Of course I'm really disappointed, but I've got a lot to play for with Arsenal."

When asked if Italy's third consecutive World Cup absence had strengthened his resolve at club level, he replied, "Maybe in a way, yes. But I'm still really disappointed and sad."

Arsenal faced intense pressure late in the match at a vibrant Estadio Jose Alvalade. Goalkeeper David Raya produced three crucial saves to keep the score level before Kai Havertz sealed the victory with a 91st-minute winner. Without those interventions, the Gunners could have faced a third straight defeat across three competitions in just 17 days.

The aftermath of Italy's failed World Cup campaign continues following manager Gennaro Gattuso's resignation last week. Yet Calafiori dismissed suggestions that external criticism of Arsenal's recent setbacks had impacted him. "It's obvious that it's a massive club with so much history that they love to speak about us," he noted. "But it doesn't change anything for me."

The defender remains focused on helping Arsenal pursue domestic and European honors, viewing the Champions League as a key opportunity to end the season on a high note.
