7M - Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez suspended for two matches after Madrid comments

Chelsea vice-captain Enzo Fernandez will miss the club's next two fixtures following disciplinary action related to public remarks about his future and interest in living in Madrid. Manager Liam Rosenior confirmed the 25-year-old Argentine will not feature in Saturday's FA Cup quarter-final against Port Vale or the April 12 Premier League clash with Manchester City.

Fernandez joined Chelsea for a British record fee of 107 million pounds in January 2023 and has since made 161 appearances for the west London club. The suspension comes after the World Cup winner told ESPN he was uncertain about remaining at Stamford Bridge beyond this season and later stated he would prefer living in Madrid as it reminds him of Buenos Aires.

Rosenior addressed the decision in a press conference, noting that while he holds Fernandez in high regard as both a person and player, a boundary regarding club culture had been crossed. The manager emphasized the ownership, sporting directors, and squad were united in the approach and clarified the door remains open for Fernandez, as this represents a sanction, not a termination.

Fernandez's representative, Javier Pastore, disputed the punishment, calling it disproportionate given the player's importance to Chelsea's Champions League qualification push. Pastore noted Fernandez never explicitly requested a transfer or criticized the club and remained professional upon learning of the decision.

Former Premier League forward Gabby Agbonlahor supported Rosenior's stance, arguing no individual should be considered bigger than the institution and that Real Madrid are unlikely to meet Chelsea's valuation for the midfielder. Chelsea currently sit sixth in the Premier League table with European qualification still attainable.

Fernandez has stated there have been no discussions with Real Madrid, and his focus remains on Chelsea pending further developments after international commitments.
