Manchester City have submitted a formal contract extension offer to Spanish midfielder Rodri as the club works to secure his long term future amid persistent interest from Real Madrid.
The twenty nine year old Ballon d'Or winner remains central to Pep Guardiolas system and played a pivotal role in Citys recent two nil Carabao Cup Final victory over Arsenal at Wembley. His current deal at the Etihad Stadium runs through summer twenty twenty seven.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano City officials have presented Rodri with a proposal featuring an important salary upgrade. Sporting director Hugo Viana is leading internal negotiations as the club aims to reflect the players status as arguably the worlds premier defensive midfielder.
Rodri recently told Spanish media during the March international break that he could not rule out a return to La Liga stating that top clubs like Real Madrid cannot be rejected. The former Atletico Madrid player has made two hundred ninety three appearances for City scoring twenty eight goals and providing thirty two assists while collecting twelve major trophies.
Should Rodri decline the new offer Manchester City would still demand a significant transfer fee this summer rather than risk losing him on a free transfer in twenty twenty seven. Real Madrid remain an interested party though reports suggest their pursuit has somewhat cooled following the Champions League last sixteen tie where Los Blancos won five one on aggregate.
The upcoming FIFA World Cup in North America is expected to play a key role in any final decision. Rodris family is also involved in the deliberation process.
Meanwhile City are proactively scouting midfield reinforcements including Nottingham Forests Elliot Anderson as potential long term options regardless of Rodris ultimate choice.
