England head coach Thomas Tuchel watched his side play out a 1-1 draw with Uruguay at Wembley in a World Cup preparation friendly that raised more questions than answers for several squad contenders. Phil Foden started ahead of Cole Palmer in the competitive number 10 role but struggled to influence proceedings against a physical Uruguay midfield before leaving the pitch holding his ankle following a heavy challenge from Ronald Araujo that went unpunished by the match officials.
Cole Palmer made a more immediate impact after coming on as a substitute creating a golden opportunity for Dominic Calvert-Lewin who headed wide from close range before delivering the corner that led to Ben White's goal. The Arsenal defender had been greeted with loud jeers when introduced in the 69th minute following his self-imposed international exile after the 2022 World Cup but silenced many critics by stabbing home from virtually on the goal line twelve minutes later.
England appeared set for a winning finish until White was penalized for a late lunge on Federico Vinas during stoppage time. After a video assistant referee review confirmed the decision Federico Valverde converted the resulting penalty in the 94th minute to secure a share of the spoils for the South American side.
Harry Maguire strengthened his case for World Cup selection with a composed defensive display that included two crucial last-ditch blocks as Uruguay pushed for a late winner. The Manchester United defender could benefit from ongoing fitness concerns surrounding John Stones while debutant goalkeeper James Trafford and first-time starter James Garner both made respectable impressions in their expanded roles.
