7M - Atletico: Tottenham Exit Champions League Despite 3-2 Victory
Posted Thursday, March 19, 2026 by 7M Sport

Tottenham Hotspur were eliminated from the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night despite securing a spirited 3-2 home win over Atletico Madrid. The result at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was not enough to overturn a heavy first-leg deficit, as Atletico progressed to the quarterfinals with a 7-5 aggregate victory.
After losing 5-2 in Madrid, Spurs started the second leg with high intensity. Dominic Solanke continued his impressive scoring streak, finding the net to give the hosts hope. Goals from Brennan Johnson and Dejan Kulusevski further fueled the London side's comeback efforts. However, Atletico Madrid remained disciplined under Diego Simeone, with Antoine Griezmann and Julian Alvarez scoring crucial away goals to maintain their aggregate lead.
Although Tottenham ended their European campaign with a victory on the night, the three-goal gap from the opening leg proved too large to overcome. Atletico Madrid now moves forward in the competition, while Spurs shift their focus back to the Premier League top-four race.
