7M - Man Utd not planning U-turn on Casemiro decision

Manchester United have no plans to reverse their decision regarding the departure of veteran midfielder Casemiro at the end of the season despite a recent surge in form and vocal pleas from supporters. The 34 year old Brazilian international announced in January that he would leave Old Trafford when his current three hundred and fifty thousand pound a week contract expires this summer. While his dominant performance and opening goal in the 3-1 victory over Aston Villa on Sunday led fans to chant for him to stay for one more year sources have told BBC Sport that the clubs hierarchy remains committed to its long term squad overhaul. The decision led by co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is driven by a desire to reduce the clubs substantial wage bill and lower the average age of the first team squad as they prepare for a significant summer transfer window.

Interim head coach Michael Carrick has also suggested that there will be no U-turn on the midfielders future despite describing his impact as terrific in recent weeks. Carrick noted that once a decision of this magnitude is made and publicized it often makes the situation easier for everyone involved to understand and plan for. Although key teammates including captain Bruno Fernandes and defender Leny Yoro have expressed their hope that the former Real Madrid star might remain at the club for another campaign the internal consensus at United is that the time is right for both parties to move on. Casemiro himself reportedly requested the news of his departure be made public early in the year to avoid distractions during the crucial final months of the Premier League season as United push for a top three finish.

The club is already identifying potential successors to fill the void that will be left in the defensive midfield position with several younger targets being closely monitored by the recruitment team. While Casemiros leadership and goalscoring contributions have been vital during Carricks tenure the hierarchy believes that reinvesting his high salary into younger talent is essential for financial sustainability and sustained on-field progress. Casemiro is expected to have several lucrative offers from the Saudi Pro League and other European clubs when he becomes a free agent in June. For now the player remains a professional and integral part of the starting eleven but the romantic notion of him staying at Old Trafford for another year appears increasingly unlikely as Manchester United sticks firmly to its strategic vision for the 2026-27 season.
