Fulham manager Marco Silva defended his heavily rotated squad following a surprising 1-0 defeat to Championship side Southampton in the FA Cup fifth round. Despite making nine changes to the starting lineup, Silva refused to blame the defeat on a controversial disallowed goal, attributing the loss instead to his team's poor execution.

The match seemed destined for extra time until Southampton's Finn Azaz was fouled in the penalty area by Joachim Andersen in the 90th minute. Ross Stewart converted the resulting penalty, sending the away supporters into celebration.
Silva, facing a congested fixture schedule, justified his squad rotation, emphasizing that if the players were seen as incapable of winning crucial matches, a reevaluation was needed. He stated, "I'm the manager. We play Sunday, Wednesday, Sunday," and declined to focus on the disallowed goal, asserting that it would only serve as an excuse.
Despite the heavy criticism for his decisions, Silva recognized that the team's overall performance fell short of expectations and highlighted the need for improvement. Now, Fulham must redirect their focus to their league campaign to recover from this setback.
On the other side, Southampton manager Tonda Eckert celebrated the notable victory, urging his players to maintain momentum as they aim for a trip back to Wembley. He noted the significance of their current cup run, especially with commemorative shirts marking the 50th anniversary of their 1976 FA Cup victory.
