7M - Milan Derby Win Leaves Scudetto Race Competitive
Posted Monday, March 09, 2026 by 7M Sport
AC Milan secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Inter Milan in the latest Derby della Madonnina at San Siro on March 9, 2026. This win marks the first time since the 2010-2011 season that Milan has triumphed in both league derbies within a single campaign. Despite this loss, Inter remains seven points ahead in the Serie A standings.

The only goal of the match came from left-back Pervis Estupinan in the 35th minute, helping Milan maintain their impressive record against their city rivals since the 2024-2025 season. In the past two years, the teams have faced each other seven times across different competitions, with Milan winning five of those encounters.
Milan's victory reduced the point difference to seven, with Inter still leading with 67 points compared to Milan's 60. However, while the win is significant for Milan's Champions League ambitions, it does little to threaten Inter's strong position in the Scudetto race. Despite the setback, statistical models from Opta indicate that Inter's likelihood of clinching the title still hovers around 93.54 percent.
Massimiliano Allegri, Milan's coach, acknowledged that while this win is valuable, Inter remains the strongest contender for the title. He emphasized the importance of maintaining their five-point lead over Napoli in the race for a Champions League spot.
Veteran midfielder Luka Modric noted the disciplined performance of Milan, asserting that their victory was deserved due to their solid defense that prevented Inter from creating dangerous chances.
While this defeat does not significantly impact Inter's title hopes, it interrupted their pursuit of a perfect season, as they aimed to reach 100 points. Coach Cristian Chivu stressed the need to stay focused, stating there are still ten matches left in the season.
