Manchester United finally faced defeat after 11 consecutive matches without loss, falling to Newcastle United 2-1 at St. James' Park on March 5, 2026. This loss ended their unbeaten streak, as they aimed to secure crucial points to maintain a top-three position in the league standings.

United started the match targeting a win, particularly after Liverpool's surprising loss to Wolverhampton. However, they conceded a penalty in injury time during the first half, which Anthony Gordon converted. Casemiro managed to equalize, but United, despite having an extra player for the second half, conceded again in the 91st minute. William Osula scored the decisive goal, handing Newcastle their first victory in three matches.
This marked United's first defeat under interim manager Michael Carrick. The last time they lost was to Aston Villa on December 21, 2025. Since then, they had secured seven victories and four draws. Following this defeat, United remains in third place in the Premier League table with 51 points from 30 matches, just two points ahead of Chelsea and three points above Liverpool.
Carrick emphasized the need for the team to learn from this result and improve moving forward, stating, "We have received praise recently, and the players deserve it. This loss won't change our approach in the next match; we'll give it our all."
