7M - Lionel Messi vs. Cristiano Ronaldo: A Statistical Breakdown of Their Weaker Foot Goals

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, two of football's all-time greats, have shared an intense rivalry spanning over two decades.

Collectively, they have amassed more than 1500 career goals, secured nine Champions League titles, and claimed 13 Ballon d'Or awards between them.
Throughout their illustrious careers, they have typically operated from opposite flanks—Ronaldo cutting in from the left onto his dominant right foot, and Messi drifting in from the right onto his favored left.
If tasked with constructing the ultimate footballer by selecting individual attributes, most would instinctively choose Ronaldo's right foot and Messi's left.
"His left foot is pretty good – better than mine," Ronaldo once remarked before the 2015 Ballon d'Or ceremony. "I'd like to have his left foot."
While Messi would likely never trade his legendary left foot, he might concede that Ronaldo's right foot surpasses his own.
Yet labeling either player as having a genuine "weak foot" feels somewhat misguided, given that many of their strikes with their non-preferred foot eclipse what most footballers achieve with their stronger side.
The Argentine famously netted a hat-trick using only his right foot during Barcelona's 4-0 victory over APOEL Nicosia in 2014.
He also claimed the Champions League Goal of the Season award in 2014-15 after delicately chipping Bayern Munich's Manuel Neuer with his so-called weaker right foot.
Ronaldo has assembled an impressive collection of left-footed finishes, including memorable Champions League efforts against Galatasaray, Ajax, and Schalke.
Remarkably, only eight players have registered more left-footed club goals than the Portuguese icon during the 21st century.
"Who's the best goal scorer in history? It's about numbers. Full stop," Ronaldo stated on a Spanish television program in 2025.
"Who's the player in history who's scored most goals with their head, their left foot, penalties, free kicks? I was looking the other day, and not being left-footed, I'm in the top 10 goal scorers with their left foot in history. And with my head, and with my right foot, and penalties. All of them.
"I'm talking about numbers. I think I'm the most complete player to have existed. In my opinion, I think it's me. I do everything well in football: with my head, free kicks, left foot. I'm fast, I'm strong.
"One thing is taste – if you like Messi, Pelé, Maradona, I understand that and I respect that – but saying Ronaldo isn't complete… I'm the most complete. I haven't seen anybody better than me, and I say it from the heart.
