Newcastle United are set to hand James Trafford a lifeline after his failed move to Manchester City.

The 23-year-old is currently second choice at Manchester City, having made a 327M return move from Burnley last summer.

City signed Paris Saint-Germain star Gianluigi Donnarumma in the same window and the Italian has impressed under Pep Guardiola who seems reluctant to hand Trafford a chance in the side.

After being handed just a fifth start since October in Saturday's 2-0 FA Cup win against Salford City, Trafford said: "It wasn't what I expected coming into the season...

"It's the reality and I have to give it my best shot. It's the situation I'm in. We train every day, but making saves, it's good fun."

Now, as reported by talkSPORT, Premier League rivals Newcastle are “ready to rescue” Trafford from Guardiola’s side in what would be a significant summer move.

Newcastle face stiff competition from rivals Leeds United and Aston Villa however, in what will be a race to sign the England international who is likely to replace Jordan Pickford under Thomas Tuchel in the years to come.

Trafford played 45 games last season as Burnley won promotion to the Premier League, conceding just 16 goals in the Championship. He will be seeking to find game time in what would be his second move away from the side who clearly do not rate him highly.

The shot stopper was called into Thomas Tuchel’s England squad in November after Nick Pope dropped out and will be hoping for a World Cup for this summer despite his lack of minutes on the pitch.
