UEFA and Real Madrid agree to end the infamous Super League: For the good of club football
Real Madrid and UEFA have reached "an agreement of principles" to bring an end to the European Super League.
Late last year, Madrid announced they would seek “substantial damages” from UEFA for blocking the project which was unveiled back in 2021.
However, after a statement published by UEFA, Real Madrid, and A22, the project looks to be scrapped.
"UEFA, European Football Clubs and Real Madrid CF reach agreement for the good of European club football.
"Following months of discussions conducted in the best interests of European football, UEFA, European Football Clubs (EFC), and Real Madrid CF announce that they have reached an agreement of principles for the well-being of European club football, respecting the principle of sporting merit with emphasis on long-term club sustainability and the enhancement of fan experience through the use of technology.
"This agreement of principles will also serve to resolve their legal disputes related to the European Super League, once such principles are executed and implemented."
FC Barcelona also confirmed on Saturday that it has formally withdrawn from the European Super League as they joined fellow European giants such as Atl9tico de Madrid, Juventus, AC Milan, Inter Milan who abandoned the idea.
English clubs such as Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur all also dropped out just days after the project was announced after fury from fans.
Reports state that the revamped Champions League format, with more matches and higher revenues has helped negotiations as clubs now generate more revenue.
