With this victory, Liverpool moved to sixth place, closing in on fifth-placed Chelsea and just three points behind fourth-placed Manchester United. Following draws by both United and Chelsea on Tuesday, Liverpool seized the chance to revive their floundering bid for a top-four finish during a difficult match in tough weather conditions.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot, reflecting on his team's recent 2-1 defeat against Manchester City, acknowledged that this season has been the toughest of his career. He emphasized the importance of Champions League qualification for the club, stating they need to be "close to perfection" to secure a spot.

While the performance was far from flawless, it was enough to keep Liverpool in contention for a top-five finish, which could lead to Champions League qualification.

Sunderland started the match with the only unbeaten home record in the Premier League, having successfully held leaders Arsenal and second-placed City to draws at the Stadium of Light. Unlike those teams, Liverpool managed to secure a gritty victory.

Florian Wirtz was a standout performer for Liverpool, creating several dangerous opportunities. His deflected shot narrowly missed the target, and a long-range effort was brilliantly saved by Sunderland's Robin Roefs. Wirtz came even closer with a low drive that hit the far post after navigating through a crowd of defenders.

Sunderland appealed for a penalty just before halftime when Ibrahima Konate brought down Brian Brobbey, but the referee declined. The Black Cats had a chance with Trai Hume firing just over shortly after the break, yet Liverpool responded well.

Van Dijk finally broke the deadlock in the 61st minute, heading home from Salah's corner after Sunderland's Habib Diarra misjudged his clearance attempt.

Due to injuries to Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong, along with Dominik Szoboszlai's suspension, Slot had to deploy Wataru Endo, making his first league start of the season at right-back. Unfortunately, Endo was stretchered off later in the match, adding to Liverpool's injury troubles.

Despite the setback, Liverpool successfully maintained their lead against Sunderland, securing a vital three points in their pursuit of Champions League football.
