7M - Liverpool Require 'Perfection' for Champions League Qualification, Admits Slot

Arne Slot acknowledged on Tuesday that his team is currently "falling short of Liverpool's standards" and must achieve near-flawless results in their remaining fixtures merely to secure a Champions League place.

The reigning English champions occupy sixth position in the Premier League, trailing a top-five spot – which is anticipated to guarantee Champions League football next season – by four points.

The Reds conceded twice in a dramatic finale to suffer a 2-1 defeat against Manchester City on Sunday, but it is a broader pattern of form that is causing the greatest concern for Slot.

Liverpool have secured victory in only six of their last 20 league matches dating back to September, and in just one of their seven outings in 2026.

"They are aware of what Liverpool's standards represent, and we are not currently meeting those standards, which is a source of disappointment for them," Slot stated during his pre-match press conference ahead of Wednesday's away fixture at Sunderland.

"In every game, there is a sense that we are on the verge of winning, but it doesn't materialize. That is arguably more challenging than playing a match where you feel the opposition is superior throughout and you are simply not good enough."

"But that isn't their perception. They believe, based on performance levels, that they can compete with any team in any league worldwide."

"Yet the reality is we are not performing to Liverpool's standards."

League leaders Arsenal and Manchester City are forecasted to contest the title, leaving three additional Champions League qualifying positions to be contested among four likely challengers.

Third-placed Aston Villa sit eight points ahead of Liverpool, with in-form Manchester United three points further back in fourth and Chelsea in fifth.

"To bridge the gap to the teams in third, fourth, and fifth positions requires a significant number of victories, which is not what we have accomplished this season," added Slot.

"That is precisely why our level must improve, and why we must approach perfection."

Dominik Szoboszlai's suspension due to a red card against Manchester City presents another selection challenge for Slot.

The Hungarian has recently deputized at right-back with both Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong sidelined through injury.

With Joe Gomez only just returning to training, one of the midfielders Curtis Jones or Wataru Endo is expected to start in defense against a Sunderland side that possesses the Premier League's only remaining undefeated home record this season.
