Mauricio Pochettino says Tottenham are too big to not challenge for the Champions League
Former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has flirted with the club once again this week.
The 53-year-old was sacked as Spurs manager in 2019 despite leading the side to a Champions League final, which his side lost 2-0 to Liverpool.
He is now with the United States national team ahead of this summer’s World Cup and was asked on the High Performance Podcast if Spurs should be challenging for Champions League and Premier League titles.
His answer was telling, as he explained that the club should not be aiming for lesser competitions after a fall from grace under Ange Postecoglou and now Thomas Frank.
“To win a Europa League, that the team won, is good, but it’s not enough. It is not enough to challenge for the Carabao Cup, or the FA Cup, or the Europa League, or the Conference (League),” Pochettino said.
“It’s a club that should be, or needs to be because the fans, what they expect is, to be in the Champions League, fighting for the Champions League, trying to believe that you can win the Champions League and also fighting for the Premier League and believing that you can win the Premier League.”
Pochettino has flirted with a return to North London a number of times and the fan favourite was also revealed that the Premier League and the Champions League mean more to him than international football's greatest prize in the World Cup.
"For me Champions League and Premier League," he revealed. "Of course the World Cup but Champions League and Premier League for me are things that I don't know how but I will touch it for sure. I don't know which club".
When asked which of his former clubs still holds a special place in his heart, Pochettino said: “It is very simple: Tottenham."
