In a tightly contested match, both teams were scoreless for 83 minutes until Nathaniel Brown struck to give Frankfurt the lead. However, the visitors quickly found themselves under pressure, conceding a penalty just two minutes later when Oscar Hojlund, the younger brother of Rasmus, received a second yellow card for fouling Rani Khedira in the box.
Before the penalty could be taken, the referee halted the game due to the heavy smoke created by the flares, obscuring visibility on the pitch. Once the haze cleared, Leopold Querfeld converted the penalty, equalizing for Union Berlin.
The match ended in a draw, leaving Union in ninth place while Frankfurt climbed to seventh ahead of the weekend's matches. This incident follows a similar occurrence last month when Bayern Munich's game against Cologne was suspended after just four minutes due to smoke from flares, which took nine minutes to dissipate before play resumed.
