7M - Liverpool Aim for Progress Against Manchester City

Head coach Arne Slot believes Liverpool's matchup against Manchester City this Sunday will serve as a litmus test for their development since struggling during their title defense.
Liverpool's performances this season have warranted defeats only occasionally, with late lapses and missed opportunities being more common issues. The 3-0 loss at the Etihad Stadium in November highlighted this, where Virgil van Dijk's disallowed header at 1-0 still resonates with fans, although he acknowledges the team was outplayed significantly in that match.
"In the first half we were outplayed for large parts," Slot reiterated this week. "They were the better team, and we want to display a different side of ourselves on Sunday."
That defeat marked Liverpool's seventh in a span of nine losses across 12 games, derailing their league campaign. However, recent performances show signs of recovery, with strikes in both boxes improving during their 6-0 Champions League win against Qarabag and a convincing 4-1 comeback against Newcastle.

The team's pressing game has improved, with summer signings Hugo Ekitike, Florian Wirtz, and Milos Kerkez showing promising form. Slot sees this rematch with City as a chance to measure the team's recent progress.
"In that game against City, it was clear where we struggled," Slot said, recalling missed chances from Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah. "I was not happy with our pressing intensity then, but I see good development now. Our players are capable of running, pressing, and combining that with offensive quality."
Wirtz's contributions off the ball have been particularly noteworthy as he settles into the Premier League. His partnership with Ekitike, which previously saw limited time together, may present a new challenge for Guardiola's side.
Liverpool has little margin for error as they pursue a top-four finish and aim to build momentum in a season where they could achieve glory in the Champions League and FA Cup. This weekend's 200th meeting with City could significantly impact their season, even without title ramifications.
"I believe we are a better team than City and have improved since that 3-0 defeat," said Alexis Mac Allister. "Now we need to prove it."
