Manchester City has reportedly identified Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany as their top candidate to replace Pep Guardiola, according to Football Insider journalist Wayne Veysey. There is increasing speculation in Premier League circles that Guardiola, 55, is set to depart at the end of the season after a decade at the helm.

In anticipation of his potential exit, City has begun preliminary discussions with potential managerial replacements. Enzo Maresca, Guardiola's former assistant, revealed that he had spoken to representatives from both City and Juventus before being dismissed from Chelsea last month.

Xabi Alonso is also a strong contender for the position following his exit from Real Madrid. However, sources indicate that Kompany remains City's primary choice, although attracting him from Bayern Munich could prove to be a significant challenge.

A favorable factor for City is Kompany's deep emotional connection to the club he led as captain during one of its most successful periods. Earlier this week, Matt Law of the Daily Telegraph noted that insiders do not anticipate Kompany's departure, even if the Manchester City role becomes available.

Given that he signed a contract extension through 2029 last October, will City be able to persuade their former captain to make a return?
