A Manchester United flop has announced his engagement to his stunning partner - the daughter of a Premier League icon.
Donny van de Beek, 28, endured a nightmare time with injuries and form across four years at Old Trafford after making a highly-anticipated £40million switch from Ajax in 2020. After making just 35 league appearances for the Red Devils, and following a short-lived and unsuccessful loan at Everton, he completed a cut-price move to Girona in 2024.
But by his side all the way through his United turmoil was his stunning girlfriend turned fiancee Estelle Bergkamp – the daughter of Arsenal and Netherlands hero Dennis - one of the greatest strikers in British football history. Van de Beek and Estelle started dating in 2019 when the Dutchman was still at Ajax.
And after seven years together and two children – a three-year-old daughter and a son born in February 2024, the couple announced their engagement in a romantic social media post.
In a joint Instagram post, black and white pictures of the two kissing and the ring on Estelle’s finger were posted alongside the caption: “The easiest YES ever.”
The couple received many congratulatory messages, including one from Dennis, who posted two love heart emojis in the comments section.
Other messages flew in from the WAGS of his former United team-mates, with Scott McTominay‘s girlfriend Cam Reading writing: “Congratulations guys so so happy for you.”
Harry Maguire‘s wife Fern echoed: “Congratulations”. Luke Shaw‘s partner Anouska Santos gushed: “Awww guys so so happy for you xxxx”.
Victor Lindelof’s wife Maja added: “Oh the biggest congratulations.” While his former Ajax and Netherlands team-mate Frenkie de Jong’s girlfriend Mikky posed: “awwwwww SO cute!!! Congratulations”.
Despite his change of scenery, Van de Beek’s career is yet to have a change of fortune back to his promising Ajax days.
After making 35 appearances in all competitions for the Catalan side in his first season, the 19-time Netherlands international ruptured his Achilles tendon in September and has been sidelined since.
Van de Beek has made just two appearances so far this season and is expected to be ruled out of action for at least another month with Girona just three points above the relegation zone in 12th place.
His father-in-law enjoyed an incredible career with Ajax, Inter Milan and Arsenal, winning the European Cup Winners' Cup and UEFA Cup with the Dutch giants and the UEFA Cup again while in Italy, before joining Arsene Wenger's legendary side, where he played a pivotal role in three Premier League triumphs in a golden era for the Gunners.
The 1993 Ballon d'Or runner-up and PFA Player's Player of the Year and FWA Footballer of the Year in 1997/98 is also known for his remarkable goal for the Netherlands in a quarter-final win over Argentina in the 1998 World Cup.
