7M - Match Preview: Inter Milan vs Torino - Coppa Italia Team News, Lineups

On track to secure the league title, Inter Milan continue their pursuit of a domestic double as they face Torino in Wednesday's Coppa Italia quarter-final at San Siro. The winner of this clash will advance to meet either Napoli or Como in the semi-finals.

Match Preview

Unbeaten in their last 11 Serie A matches and scoring freely, Inter Milan have shifted into a higher gear in recent weeks, solidifying their lead at the top. They maintained their advantage over the chasing pack with a comfortable victory over Cremonese last week, courtesy of first-half goals from captain Lautaro Martinez and the increasingly influential Piotr Zielinski.

This marked a third consecutive win across all competitions for Inter, who are determined to lift silverware this season following last year's disappointments. Prior wins against Pisa (6-2) and Borussia Dortmund (2-0) – the latter securing a favorable seeding in the upcoming Champions League playoffs against Bodo/Glimt – have bolstered their momentum.

Now, before turning their focus back to the league with a weekend trip to Sassuolo, coach Cristian Chivu's team resumes its Coppa Italia quest. As nine-time winners (most recently in 2023), Inter entered this season's competition emphatically, thrashing Venezia 5-1 in the last 16. They now face perhaps their favorite opponent: Inter have won 12 of the last 13 league meetings with Torino, including each of the last seven by an aggregate score of 17-2. Following a 5-0 defeat here in August, Torino are winless in their last 19 league visits to San Siro.

While the historical context suggests Torino have little chance of causing an upset, they did defy expectations by knocking out Roma with a dramatic last-16 win in the previous round. Victories over Modena and Pisa earlier in the competition were followed by a success secured through a Che Adams brace and a late Emirhan Ilkhan strike. However, it has been a challenging winter overall for Torino, with a recent run of four consecutive league defeats putting pressure on manager Marco Baroni before a crucial win over Lecce last weekend. A heavy 6-0 loss to Como had even sparked relegation concerns, but Adams' goal – his first in the league for two months – helped lift Torino nine points clear of the drop zone. Nevertheless, containing Italy's most potent attack presents an entirely different challenge, and Torino may travel to Lombardy with more hope than genuine expectation.

Team News

Facing a congested February schedule, Inter manager Cristian Chivu is expected to rotate his squad. This could provide opportunities for squad players like veteran defender Stefan de Vrij and backup goalkeeper Josep Martínez. While regular starters Denzel Dumfries, Hakan Çalhanoğlu, and Nicolò Barella remain unavailable, Carlos Augusto may return after missing the last match. Top scorer Lautaro Martinez (13 Serie A goals) could be rested, potentially allowing Marcus Thuram or Ange-Yoan Bonny to start.

Torino are also likely to make changes, as they did against Roma. Manager Marco Baroni has indicated that players with fitness concerns will not be risked. Ivan Ilić, Gvidas Gineitis, Zakaria Aboukhlal, Adam Masina, and Ardian Ismajli are expected to miss out. With Giovanni Simeone still sidelined by a thigh issue, Duván Zapata, Alieu Njie, Che Adams, and new signing Sandro Kulenovic are competing to lead the line. Recent arrivals, midfielder Matteo Prati and center-back Luca Marianucci, made their club debuts last Sunday and could feature.

Prediction

Inter Milan boast a perfect record against teams in the bottom half of Serie A this season, scoring 33 goals and conceding only six. Even with potential rotations, their formidable strength at San Siro – a venue where Torino have repeatedly struggled – should see them through comfortably.

Prediction: Inter Milan 3-0 Torino
