Wolverhampton Wanderers have announced the signings of English midfielder Angel Gomes from Marseille and striker Adam Armstrong from Southampton.
Gomes joins on a season-long loan with an option for a permanent transfer set at approximately six million pounds. Armstrong has signed a three-and-a-half-year contract for an initial fee of seven million pounds. His arrival follows the departure of striker Jorgen Strand Larsen, who completed a move to Crystal Palace for forty-eight million pounds on deadline day.
Currently bottom of the Premier League and facing a significant gap to safety, Wolves are preparing for an anticipated relegation to the Championship.
Manager Rob Edwards shared his thoughts on the new additions: "Angel and I have been in conversation over the past few weeks. I outlined our vision, expressed how much we wanted him, and explained the role he could play. He is very motivated to return to playing in England, and we are equally excited to welcome a player with such hunger and a point to prove. He possesses excellent quality, and I look forward to seeing him settle into the team."
Gomes began his professional career at Manchester United, making ten appearances before transferring to Lille in 2020. During his time at Lille, he featured in 126 matches and scored ten goals. He moved to Marseille last summer, where he has scored four times in 19 appearances for Roberto de Zerbi's squad, which currently sits third in Ligue 1.
Armstrong spent four and a half seasons at Southampton after joining from Blackburn Rovers in 2021, netting 43 goals in 174 games. This season, he has scored 11 goals in 32 appearances for the Saints. The striker started his career at his hometown club Newcastle United and spent last season on loan at West Bromwich Albion, a rival of Wolves.
"Adam is thrilled to be here," Edwards added. "He is a competitor with the right mentality, which is exactly what we require at this moment. He was very enthusiastic about joining Wolves and committed to playing for the club, so securing his signature is a positive step for us. I have long been an admirer of his. He is a talented footballer, a consistent goal threat, and a proven scorer. While he views himself primarily as a number nine, he offers tactical flexibility and can also operate effectively from wide positions."
