Barcelona staged a blistering second-half rally to claim a 4-1 victory over Copenhagen at the Camp Nou, clinching a top-eight finish in the Champions League and locking in a direct spot in the competition’s Round of 16. Paris Saint-Germain, by contrast, will have to navigate the playoff stage to continue their European campaign.

Goals from Robert Lewandowski, Lamine Yamal, Raphinha and Marcus Rashford on Wednesday saw the Catalan giants finish fifth in the overall standings with 16 points – level on points with Manchester City, Chelsea and Sporting CP, and edging out the trio to claim the position on goal difference.

Copenhagen caught the hosts cold early in the contest, with 17-year-old Viktor Dadason slotting home the opener past Joan Garcia in the fourth minute. For all their attacking talent, Barcelona labored through a frustrating first half, only to ignite a stirring fightback after the interval that turned the tide of the match completely.

Yamal teed up Lewandowski for the equaliser in the 48th minute, before the teenage star found the net himself in the 60th with a deflected strike that left Copenhagen goalkeeper Dominik Kotarski with no chance of making a save. Raphinha converted a penalty to extend Barcelona’s lead to 3-1 after Lewandowski was fouled inside the box, and Rashford capped off the scoring with a clinical free kick in the 85th minute.

Speaking to Movistar Plus after the match, 18-year-old Yamal said the squad’s sole focus heading into the game was securing a top-eight finish. “We all came here tonight with the goal of getting into the top eight, and we’re over the moon with the win,” he stated. “When you concede an early goal in the Champions League, mounting a comeback is incredibly tough, but the team showed so much resilience and managed to turn it around. With the packed fixture list we have throughout the season, cutting out two extra matches is a massive relief for all of us.”

For all the comfort of the final scoreline, Barcelona endured a disjointed opening 45 minutes, during which Copenhagen’s early goal left the Camp Nou crowd stunned. Dadason’s opener came after Mohamed Elyounoussi played a defence-splitting through ball, allowing the youngster to beat Barca’s high defensive line for pace before firing a low shot past Garcia to find the net.

Clearly rattled by the early setback, Barcelona wasted a string of attacking opportunities in the first half. Raphinha and Lewandowski both spurned golden chances to draw level, while Eric Garcia came the closest to an equaliser when his powerful driven effort crashed against the crossbar in the 33rd minute. The hosts struggled to find their rhythm, with their attack lacking cohesion and their final ball letting them down repeatedly.

The second half, however, brought a complete transformation from the Blaugrana. Barely three minutes after the restart, Yamal burst forward on a counterattack, skipping past two Copenhagen defenders before unselfishly laying the ball off for Lewandowski to tap home into an empty net and draw the sides level.

Emboldened by the equaliser, Barcelona seized full control of the game and upped the tempo, pinning Copenhagen deep inside their own half for long stretches. The hosts then took the lead on the hour mark through Yamal, whose deflected shot from inside the penalty area looped over the stranded Kotarski and nestled perfectly into the far corner of the net.

Raphinha made it 3-1 in the 69th minute, converting a penalty after Lewandowski was brought down inside the box as he looked to get a shot away. Substitute Rashford then put the result beyond doubt late on, curling a free kick home to seal the comprehensive 4-1 win for the away side on the night.

While Barcelona produced a clinical and ruthless attacking display to secure the victory and their Round of 16 spot, lingering questions remain over the side’s defensive organisation. The Catalans completed the entire Champions League League Phase without keeping a single clean sheet, and finished with the worst defensive record among the top 13 teams in the overall standings – a flaw that will need addressing as they head into the knockout stages.
