7M - Matheus Cunha Faces Possible FA Ban Over Goal Celebration
Posted Monday, January 26, 2026 by 7M Sport
Matheus Cunha could face disciplinary action from the Football Association after his winning goal in Manchester United's 3-2 victory at Arsenal, following a celebration that may breach FA rules on offensive language.

The 26-year-old substitute scored a stunning 87th-minute winner at the Emirates and appeared to shout "It's the f*****g biggest!" directly into a pitchside camera. Under FA regulations, using "offensive, insulting or abusive language" can result in a red card—or retrospective punishment if missed by match officials.
Sky Sports has since apologized for broadcasting the moment, acknowledging it could trigger an FA investigation. A similar incident occurred in 2011 when Wayne Rooney received a two-match ban for yelling "What? F*****g what?" into a camera after scoring against West Ham. That suspension caused him to miss a Premier League game versus Fulham and an FA Cup semi-final loss to Manchester City.
Cunha, who also provided the assist for Patrick Dorgu's goal in United's recent 2-1 derby win over Manchester City, came off the bench again to decisive effect. Interim head coach Michael Carrick praised his attitude: "He's been disappointed not to start but used it in a really good way. Two huge moments—he totally deserves that goal."
Carrick, unbeaten in his two matches in charge with back-to-back 3-2 wins over City and Arsenal, declined to comment on his future but emphasized focus: "We're not getting carried away. We've got important games ahead."
United now sit fourth in the Premier League, with fans chanting "We're gonna win the league" at full-time. If Cunha receives a two-game ban like Rooney, he would miss home fixtures against Fulham and Tottenham.
The FA has been contacted for comment.
