Lens missed the chance to reclaim the top spot in Ligue 1 after their 10-game winning streak across all competitions was halted by a 3-1 defeat at Marseille on Sunday. Amine Gouiri’s brace—his first in the league since May 2025—and a debut goal from Ethan Nwaneri secured the victory for the hosts.
Following Paris Saint-Germain's 1-0 win over Auxerre on Friday, only a victory would have sent Lens back to the summit. Their hopes unraveled early when Facundo Medina's long pass found Igor Paixao, who set up Gouiri for a deflected opener inside three minutes.
Marseille doubled their lead in the 13th minute through 17-year-old debutant Nwaneri. The Arsenal loanee cut inside Malang Sarr and finished calmly into the bottom corner, showcasing the technical promise that earned him his move.

Lens struggled to respond before halftime, with Odsonne Edouard blazing their best chance over the bar. A brighter start to the second half was short-lived, as fouls and interruptions prevented any sustained momentum.
Gouiri sealed the points in the 75th minute, tapping in Timothy Weah's low cross after a quick VAR check for offside. Rayan Fofana pulled one back late for Lens, but the damage was already done.
The loss marks the first time Lens have conceded three or more goals since last April. They will look to rebound at home to Le Havre next Friday, while Marseille turn their focus to a crucial UEFA Champions League trip to Club Brugge on Wednesday.
