Coach of Napoli, Antonio Conte faces an endless injury crisis before the Champions League clash against FC Copenhagen, but has urged his team not to feel sorry for themselves: "We won’t go out with our heads down, but with our heads held high to fight for our chances to win."
"I spoke clearly to the boys. Tomorrow we play with whoever is available, and we’ll look for new solutions. We’ve been working on this for the past two days, and I hope tomorrow we can put it into practice on the pitch." Those were the words of0Napoli coach Antonio Conte on the eve of the Champions League clash in Copenhagen, with a squad depleted by a long list of injuries.
"You have to change something," Conte said, "since we’ve also lost0Matteo Politano, Amir Rrahmani, and David Neres, who still has an ankle problem. We have to find solutions without feeling sorry for ourselves, staying focused on what we can bring to the table. There’s nothing we can do about things beyond our control, but I’m optimistic about how we’ll play."
"I have positive feelings," Conte continued, "I know I have a group of players who know how to respond, especially when the difficulties keep piling up. I hoped the injuries would decrease over time, but instead they’re increasing, yet the boys know I trust them. We’ve studied Copenhagen, and we have a game plan to go for something important. If they play better, we’ll applaud them, but we’re not here with our heads down. Tomorrow we’ll go out with our heads held high and play for our chances to win," Conte concluded.
"It’s wonderful for me to come back here, to a special stadium where I have so many great memories, a passionate stadium with fans who create a great atmosphere. But we’re here determined to win," said Rasmus Hojlund on the eve of the Champions League match against the team from his hometown, where he also played.
"For us," said the Napoli striker, "it’s important to win tomorrow, we’re level on points with Copenhagen, and we have another home match against Chelsea, but we’ll be in a better position if we win tomorrow. We’ve been a bit unlucky with injuries so far, but we still have a strong squad and a mentality that allows us to keep pushing up the table."
The Danish striker also replied to the fact that Romelu Lukaku could soon be back. "I see him as a great player who knows how to score goals. I used to watch him when I played here in Copenhagen, and I hope I’ll get to play a lot with him. He’s a strong presence for the team. We can definitely play together, he’s shown that over the years. I grew up playing with two forwards, so it works well for me."
