Retired! Former Liverpool star Mamadou Sakho announces he is hanging up his boots for good
Former Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho has announced he is officially retiring.
Former Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain defender Mamadou Sakho has officially hung up his boots at the age of 35.
The announcement came during the Coupe de France match between Paris Saint-Germain and Paris FC at the Parc des Princes stadium.
Sakho was applauded by Parisian fans after he was invited to the game to wave goodbye to supporters, who welcomed his speech and announcement with open arms.
“I wanted to officially announce the end of my career,” he said. “This is an immense pleasure – to return to my garden with such an exceptional crowd.”
“The pitch is just as beautiful as ever. I have wonderful memories here. I wanted to introduce you to my mother, because without her, my story would have been different.”
“Big respect to all the mothers in the world. I want to thank everyone and officially announce my retirement. Thank you to the Parc des Princes and to Paris FC, without which PSG wouldn’t have been part of my journey.”
The French centre-back turns 36 next month and leaves behind a successful career which includes stints at Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool, Crystal Palace, Montpellier, and finally he found himself in Georgia with Torpedo Kutaisi in 2025.
