Carragher says Jesus should start over Gyokeres: He's a better player, that's a fact
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has made a bold comparison between Arsenal's Gabriel Jesus and Viktor Gyokeres.
GyF6keres was intended to spearhead Arsenal's attack heading into this season after making the move from Sporting Lisbon for in a deal worth around 363M.
However, the Swedish star has scored just five Premier League goals in 17 appearances and has struggled to adapt under manager Mikel Arteta, who has failed so far to get the best out of him.
The striker failed to make the scoresheet once more as Arsenal crushed Aston Villa 4-1 before being taken off for Jesus in the second half.
Carragher, speaking after the game, revealed that he thinks the Brazilian should be starting ahead of Gyokeres as he believes he is the better option in attack.
"The one negative out of tonight for Arsenal is that Gyokeres should not be starting, when they have players like this. In a couple of games time, when Jesus is a bit more up to speed, he should be starting. He's a better player than Gyokeres - that's a fact."
"There's been questions in the past asking if (Jesus) is good enough for Arsenal to go and win the league. But right now, he's better than the guy they brought in who they thought was going to win them the league.
“Havertz or him as the central striker is a better player than Gyokeres. He lacks finesse and quality when you think of what they've got on the bench. I think Arsenal need to improve on Gyokeres and they've got players that can in Jesus."
Gyokeres scored 97 goals in just over 100 appearances for Sporting, but is yet to show his worth for the Gunners. Manager Mikel Arteta has a huge choice to make in attack as Jesus becomes available, as dropping Gyokeres may be the best option.
However, Arteta did say that he is in full support of the striker, who continues to disappoint.
“I know we need to continue to tweak and understand him a little bit better in certain situations, and he needs to do the same. But that's about time. We have full support for him."
