Liverpool to welcome back McConnell as his Ajax loan is terminated ahead of January window

Liverpool midfielder James McConnell is expected to return to Anfield after his loan spell at Ajax is set to be terminated early.

The 21-year-old has managed only 219 minutes from seven appearances in all competitions for the Eredivisie outfit, who are sit third in the league, behind Feyenoord and PSV Eindhoven.

McConnell made seven Ajax appearances before falling out of favour after the sacking of former Liverpool coach John Heitinga.

Heitinga, lost his job at the start of November after the team had won just one of their previous seven matches, and he has since been replaced by Fred Grim as interim.

His last outing for the side came in a Champions League tie against Galatasaray on November 5th, almost two months ago.

Now, as reported by the Liverpool Echo and the Express, he is set to return to Merseyside as the Premier League champions end his loan early after it looks like he will not feature for the side regularly despite their struggles.

The Athletic journalist James Pearce reports that Liverpool are unlikely to send McConnell out on loan once more over the next month.

“Liverpool are unlikely to make a decision over whether McConnell is loaned out elsewhere for the second half of the season until later in the January window.”

Liverpool face Leeds on New Year’s Day ahead of a trip to Fulham three days later. Later in January they face Barnsley in the FA Cup which could hand McConnell a great chance to slide back into the first team setup.
